Winter: If you have never attended an official dog sled race competition than the Can-AM International Sled Dog races are for you. This race has been held in Fort Kent for the last sixteen years. With a $40,000 dollar purse and some of the best dog sled teams in the US and Canada, this race is both exciting for participants and observers. The race consist of three divisions, 30, 60 and 250 mile runs with the latter being a qualifying race for the famous and coveted, Iditarod. The race started as a way to provide provide mushers with an opportunity to race locally and has since turned into one of the longest distance races in the east. Held in the Lonesome Pine Ski Lodge, the trails are long and wide perfect for viewing and photographing the races. The crowd is loyal and loves the excitement of dog sled races.
